The Reception year curriculum is taught across seven areas. There are the three ‘prime areas’: communication & language, personal, social & emotional development and physical development. There are also four ‘specific areas’: literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive & creative arts. These are taught in equal amounts each day through a majority of child-initiated learning activities and small teacher-led sessions.
Topics change at the beginning of each half term and pupil feedback determines the activities to be taught. Topics will include enhancement opportunities, such as visits and trips. There is a substantial link with the Year 1 class, which will help ease the transition from Reception at the end of the academic year.
The Reception year curriculum is under-pinned by the belief that children should learn in a creative, positive and stimulating environment, incorporating the outdoors as much as possible.
